End of the Year Schoolwork Organization

School is out, and your children couldn't be happier! But if you are like most parents, you are currently drowning in a mound of educational clutter that signifies the end of another school year. It's hard enough to motivate your children to get ready for school in the fall, much less encourage them to weed through those paper piles! Here's how to do it:

Toy Storage Organizer

1) Schedule a time with your child - Pick a day that is close to the end of the school year, before your student disappears into the hazy days of summer. The key is that you work together with your child (instead of doing it for him or her!) so that organizational skills are learned. Offer a reward for completing the project, such as a special lunch or movie outing.

Toy Storage Organizer

2) Sort papers into piles by subject - Have your child gather up all paperwork from his or her binders, folders, bedroom, backpack, etc. and designate a spot for each subject. Work at a table, or on the floor, whatever is more conducive. Designate a "recycling" pile for papers that are no longer needed.

3) Look for the diamonds in the rough - Most homework assignments and notes are disposable after the school year is over. Your child should look for the treasured moments from the school year, such as:

* A good grade on a test that the subject matter was particularly challenging to master
* Program from the school play that your child starred in
* A favorite essay from English class, with complimentary notes from the teacher written in the margins

4) Keep the best and recycle the rest - Choose the top memories and place them in a clear poly envelope, acid-free files or folders (to preserve the papers properly). Make sure to remove tape, paperclips, and rubber bands before storing materials away in a dark area for protection. Avoid placing paper memorabilia in an area with wide fluctuations in temperature and humidity - attics, basements, and garages are no-nos!

5) A picture captures the memory and saves space - For large school items (artwork, dioramas, science fair projects, etc), take a photograph of the project while it is still in pristine condition, and store the photos with the other school treasures from the year.

6) Create a memory box - Beginning in kindergarten, give each child one banker's box for all school memories. At the end of each school year, your child places favorite schoolwork and other memorabilia into the box. The box has to last through senior year, so if it fills too quickly, review the contents and do a bit more weeding.

7) Review and renew supplies - Put away school supplies, such as scissors, pencils, and markers. Start a school supply shopping list for the fall by recording any items that have been depleted or destroyed. Post the list on the refrigerator and add to it as needed throughout the summer.

Creative Kids Bedrooms

Your child's bedroom can be an oasis of relaxation and creativity. With a little planning and attention to detail, you can create a refuge instead of a war zone.

Toy Storage Organizer

Turn maintaining messy bedrooms into a fun, creative family project!

Toy Storage Organizer

Simple Steps to creating a creative kids bedroom:

1. Have your Kids take ownership of their space.

Kids will take pride and care of a space that they have put time and energy into. It is important for kids to have space to develop their own tastes and interests. This is especially vital for kids who have to share a room.

2. Have a planning pow-wow

Get your child excited about their bedroom makeover or transformation. Ask your child to visualize their new space, and what they would like in their bedrooms. Consider the colors your child likes, the activities your child likes to do, and what their favorite things/themes are.

Also, consider your child's habits. Some children are messy and need to be taught how to tidy up after themselves, which is easier if they have a space they are proud of. Some are visual and they need to have everything in view. While this can appear a mess, ask your child to find something specific: chances are they will know exactly where it is. If your child is a visual organizer (and most are), you need to devise a different plan for storage and organization. Some children respond to color-coding and some find it easier if there are different areas devoted solely to one activity. Talk to your child and experiment to find a system that works for both of you.

3. Create a Kid friendly Space

Painting is a time consuming laborious process. Kids also frequently change their tastes. Instead, ask the child to select a theme or a color they love and work together to find and create accents that will allow your child's personality to shine through.

Work with your child to create activity zones in their bedrooms. If your child loves to read, provide a comfortable chair and a good reading light. If your child likes to dress-up, create a place to keep all the clothing and props tidy and easily accessible. If your child loves Lego, designate an area for building and an area for storage. They key is to create a space that allows for easy storage, access and cleanup.

As an added bonus, if your child has his own designated space for activities, there is less chance of spillover into the rest of the house!

Create a vision board/ inspiration wall. This feature will grow with your child. Allow space on one wall to be used as a visual representation of your child's hopes, dreams, goals, and inspirations. Set up a whiteboard, a chalkboard, or a cork board for older children. Encourage kids to use this space however they like, to draw pictures, decorate with art they made or appreciate, or make notes of things they want to do or learn. As children are primarily visual, this is a wonderful way for them to express themselves and keep motivated.

4. Set some ground rules:

Work with your child to create some ground rules. If your child feels like they have some input, they will have an easier time sticking with the rules. Naturally, the earlier you start, the easier this is. Here are a few suggestions:
One Activity at a time - this is very important in creative households. It is very easy to be swept away by inspiration and allow many things left unfinished. This is okay; however, make it a point to always clean up from one activity before starting another. This takes only a few minutes and is much easier than facing it all at the end of the day. Tidy up Time - Especially suitable for young children; make cleaning up into a game. Give children a warning a few minutes prior so they are not surprised when it is time to clean up (this helps ward off temper tantrums) and then start the tidy-up game. Tell the child or children that you have selected one piece of garbage (or toy). They have one or two minutes (depending on how big the mess is) to rush around the room and put as much garbage as possible into the wastebasket (or put toys away). Start the timer and all clean up together. This makes cleaning up fun and something the children look forward too. One In, One Out, Permanently - This is a wonderful rule that will bring an end to overflowing rooms and allows children to learn the value of their things. The concept is simple, for every new toy or book or clothing your child gets (this is up to you), one must be removed. Ask your child what they would like to do with their old items. There are many possibilities. Donate to children's hospitals, churches, women's shelters, libraries. Look into the options in your area. Go and visit these places with your child. It will open their eyes and allow them to see how fortunate they are. Once they have made a decision, get as involved as possible. You will make quite an impact if your child is able to see how much joy their old things can bring to a child in need. No TV or Computers - There are numerous studies and statistics warning against putting a television in your child's bedroom. Television can't be used in a constructive, educational way if you have no way of monitoring the programs or how much your child watches. It can also be highly disruptive to sleep patterns. To quote an article in the National Post:"Researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health who analyzed data for 2,707 children found 5 year olds are more likely to have behavior problems, disturbed sleep and 'less emotional reactivity' if they have a television in their bedroom than those with TV-free rooms."5. Get creative!

In this process, you can find many opportunities to get creative and bond with your child.

At every age level, kids can get involved and be an active creator in designing a space they will be excited to call their own. All children will want to be involved in the important decisions such as layout, color, and adding personality. Younger children can help in all aspects of putting the room together as well as making arts and crafts in their chosen colors for decoration. Older children can do all of the above, but you could also give them a budget to work with to buy a few new things for their bedroom. See how creative they can get with their money. Shop in unconventional places (craft stores, thrift stores, online) and try to use items in new and creative ways.

Encourage your child to think outside the box. Adapt the theater sports game "Anything BUT..." into your shopping. For example, if you are looking at a coat rack say this is anything BUT a coat rack: challenge your child and yourself to think of as many other uses for it as you can. You might be surprised at the great ideas you come up with!

Not all of these things have to be done in one day. This should be an ongoing process, which allows for great creativity and imagination.

Turning your child's boring bedroom into a creative haven will give you countless hours of quality time and allow children to begin to develop their own personal style and identity.

Build Your Own Chess Set From Nuts and Bolts

Did you know you can easily make a chess set from nothing but nuts and bolts? Simply stand each lag bolt on its end and decorate it to match the similar pieces on a traditional chess board. Just be creative and use different types of bolts with different heads such as a machine screw, carriage bolt, or lag bolt. There are several simple steps to take to build your own chess set.

Toy Storage Organizer

Identify what color you want each side to be. You may use different bolt plated with different steel, such as zinc lag bolts, or galvanized carriage bolts, or you can just go with stainless steel. Consider using something that is plain and small for the pawns. After all the pawns are the weakest on the board!

Toy Storage Organizer

Using bolts that are larger in size will help to distinguish between some of the larger chess pieces, like the queen and the king. One creative way to build a knight would be to use a hook screw, (you know, the kind that you hang plants from the ceiling at home). You can use a square head lag bolt for rooks, this will give a good effect to the chess piece as they can only move backward, forward, and side to side.

Use some of your creativity for the queen, and use a cap nut. Cap nuts have a rounded top and can really differentiate it between all of the other pieces. Finally you are ready to build the king. You will want to use a lock nut for the head, and a tall big lag bolt. The lock nut that I refer to is often called a k locknut, you can also attach washers with big teeth for the look of a crown.

Just a couple more tips and you'll be on your way to building your own chess set from just nuts and bolts. Remember to not get bolts that are too top heavy as they may fall down. Try to test the bolts before you roll out the finished product, as you may need to cut them so they are shorter. So there you have it, simple instructions on how to build your own chess set.

What to Keep, What to Throw Away - Organizing Your Home

Having been through several home renovations, i.e. ceilings, floors and walls, my personal items each time were thrown into boxes and stored in the garage. These boxes have been there for 5 years. Heck if I remembered what was in them. Being a single mom, my life has always moved at marathon speed tending to my son, taking care of the dogs, and working in a dynamic office environment. A single Mom wears multiple hats and never has free time. I have my paper bag ready for those hyperventilation moments. Since the beginning of those projects, my two car garage had become a one car compact garage. The garage was filled from one end to the other and to the ceiling with boxes, storage trunks, suitcases, books, toys and sports paraphernalia. The disorganization was driving me crazy. I had to take control of this growing behemoth and minimize the chaos. My cup had finally runneth over. I came up with a plan now that I had a little more time. My son is older, in high school and his friends have wheels. My taxi driver hat can retire.

Toy Storage Organizer

Since I could not move around in the garage, I parked my car outside for several days. I started gathering items I could reach, identify and no longer wanted. I joined friends in their garage sale. I was inexperienced at garage sale savviness and lingo. It was my first one; I wasn't sure what to do. Friends had told me to place price tags on all the items. How do you know what to charge? I did a little homework and searched the web. I found the Salvation Army's website had a great valuation guideline for secondhand items. I started there with my pricing. As a side note, you will never collect anything close to what you paid for the item, just get rid of it and let someone else enjoy it. Clothing items were priced at and under, designer dresses, and under (some were originally 0 and up and had never been worn), books 3 for , toys - , furniture - , electronic pricing can be left open for best offer and small items $.25 -.. By the end of the garage sale, I had collected 0. I never new garage sales could be so much fun and profitable. My negotiation skills were challenged during this event. For price tags, you can find pre-printed stick-on ones at your local office supply store and left-over items can be donated to charitable organizations, obtain a receipt. You can use it for your tax return if you itemize. Advertise your garage sale in Craig's List and list a few Doorbuster items.

Toy Storage Organizer

Having cleared some space, I was able to set up a long banquet table. I used the table to hold my boxes while I gleaned through the contents. I bought a few smaller boxes in order to re-organize and break-down larger ones. I wanted boxes I could lift myself. I went through all my financial records and shredded records I no longer required. The IRS recommends keeping documents for 3 years if you have consistently filed your taxes on time. You can visit the IRS' website and search under Record keeping for time frames that are applicable to your situation.

1. Home Owner - keep all receipts and documents for home improvements, you will need them if you sell your house. If you have receipts on thermal paper, make a copy and maybe scan too. Ink on thermal paper vanishes. Renovations will add to your original purchase price which reduces your taxable gain if you sell for more than the purchase price. Keep mortgage records. Should you refinance, many of the documents you gathered previously may be beneficial to future refinances. Keep all titles in a fireproof box or safe. That goes for your cars and other valuable items you may own.
2. Medical Records - Have the hospital or doctor provide you with copies of your CT Scans, X-rays, MRI's or other tests you've had performed, a doctor provided me that advice years ago. Hospitals are notorious for losing or misfiling documents. You control your medical history. Keep copies of all vaccinations, when performed. You never know when you may need a good Tetanus shot again, 5 year expiration if I remember correctly.
3. School Records - I keep all report cards, awards and diplomas. For children, I keep a few small special projects they completed for a particular school year.
4. Kid's Toys - If the toy is in good condition and I have the original package, I may save it if I feel it could become a collectible some day. I wish I had my first Barbie or Chatty Cathy Doll. My cousin has her original Howdy Dowdy Marionette in its box.
5. Photos - In my spare time, I scan all photos. I have created two folders on my hard drive for my two kids. I have scanned all my Mom's family photos, over 1000. I love viewing the photos in Slide Show mode.
6. Create a Box For Each Person in Your Household - For each child, I have created a box that contains their school records, medical records, school pictures, school papers, awards, family birthday cards with messages, etc. I have chronological folders in each box. I feel they will be able to go through each folder some day and reminisce about their life and share with their children. Medical records may come in handy when they have children. At some point, these records will be scanned too.

For each new box I create, I attach a masking tape label. I write the contents of the box on the label and date it. I like masking tape because I can easily remove it to add a new one should I make modifications. The smaller boxes make everything more convenient. I feel if I were to move, I have everything inventoried, boxed and ready to go. I will number each box and inventory it on my computer as well. Soon life will be at my finger tips. Cleaning through the remaining boxes resulted in additional garage sale items and 0. I continued my organization with my closets and other rooms; I removed the knick knack dust collector items. I finally feel I can breathe. Start your organization today; it can be profitable for you too, mentally and financially. Before closing, I have one more tidbit to share with you that I heard on the radio, KFI 640 am, this past weekend. They discussed the "321" approach for backing up files on your computer. Make 3 copies, use 2 different formats, store 1 off site. Thank You. Kathryn Alexander.

How to Organize Your Home School

So you homeschool - that is great! Homeschooling is wonderful, we have been enjoying it ourselves for a number of years and we love it. The big question - I have all this great stuff - where do I put it? How do I organize the papers, and pencils and pens and those little tiny bears and don't even get me started on the books, oh my the books. I have the stuff, now I need to know how to organize it all.

Toy Storage Organizer

First - take a deep breathe and know that you are not alone, either in your homeschooling journey or in your quest to manage the madness and learn how to organize.

Toy Storage Organizer

The Steps to Organization (a.k.a. How to Organize) are fairly straight forward. Imagine you are putting together a puzzle. What do you do first? (Well, first you open the box, but I am figuring we got past that part.) So what do you second? Depending on the kind of person you are, you start by sorting the pieces. The pieces with the straight edges go into one pile and the pieces without the straight edges go back into the bottom of the box. So our first step in learning how to organize is:

HOW TO ORGANIZE STEP 1 -- SORTING (woo hoo, yeah, think trumpets and fanfare -- this is exciting, we know where to start learning how to organize)

After you are done sorting your pieces, we move on to step two. (I know, I know - I didn't tell you how to sort or what to sort or how to organize anything yet - that comes later in the article. Just hang in there.)
So what is the next thing that you do when building a puzzle? Do we sort it out and then just walk away? Do we put all the middle pieces (i.e. pieces without the straight edge) together first? No, first we build a border for our pieces. So step two is:

HOW TO ORGANIZE STEP 2 -- BUILDING A BORDER (more fanfare, sounds of cheering)

The border is now built, but we are not done yet. If you left the puzzle with just a border you never get to enjoy the beauty of it. The same goes for learning how to organize. Building a border is great, but now you have to use it. How do you use a border? I am glad that you asked (OK, I am glad that I asked, but if you were here I am sure you would have asked.) We use a puzzle border to give us information about the puzzle. The border tells us how big the final product will be. It helps us to determine where the interior pieces should go and it also lets us see a light at the end of the tunnel. (I went from puzzles to trains, and soon I will go back again. It's a mixed metaphor, but I digress.) So step three of how to organize is:

HOW TO ORGANIZE STEP 3 -- FILLING IN THE PIECES

This makes sense when you are thinking about a puzzle, after all you have this pile of non-straight-edge pieces just sitting there and waiting. How does this work with organizing? Do you recall way back in how to organize - step one where we were sorting? Those are our missing pieces, so filling in the pieces means that you are now putting stuff away. (Yes, another light at the end of the tunnel) So that's it we are done, right? After all, we sorted the pieces, we built the border, we filled in the pieces, our puzzle is done. Right? Wrong! Sorry, but there is one more step before you are organized. (Actually, I am not sorry, but it sounds nicer to say it that way rather than - tough luck bucko, quit being a whiner.) So then what is the last step? Take a minute and think about it - when you are done with a puzzle what do you do? Do you leave it where you built it? Do you take it all apart so you can do it again another time? Do you smear goo on it so that is will become a work of art for you to hang on the wall? For the purposes of our analogy (i.e. comparing building a puzzle with learning how to organize) We are going to so no, no, yes. No, we don't just leave it where it is - that just adds to the clutter. No, we don't take it apart (What? Are you crazy? We just did all this work getting organized, for goodness sake, don't take it apart.) Yes, we smear goo on it so it is a work of art. Now, before you go get actual goo and really make a mess of things remember - this is an analogy. The goo is basically the stuff that holds the puzzle together and keeps it looking nice. That is what we need - we want our newly organized area to look nice. So the final step is:

HOW TO ORGANIZE STEP 4 -- THE FINAL STEP - KEEP IT ORGANIZED (I forgot the fanfare for step three so let's just add it in here - fanfare, fireworks and a laser light show, and a skywriter writing out "you just learned the basic steps of how to organize".)

Now that we have climbed the "Steps of Organization" (aka how to organize) together, let's look at an example.

Note: if you have only short periods of time to work on your organizing project then still work your way through the steps, however organize in small sections. For example, organize the floor first, then organize shelves (one at a time), etc.)

Step 1: Sorting

This is the hard part, but if you want to learn how to organize and stay organized, it really is necessary. Let's head off to your homeschool room / area / closet and bring some boxes with you. Begin by labeling your boxes in the following way - trash, donate / sell, doesn't belong in this area - depending on the amount of stuff that you have you may need multiple boxes. Once you have gone through your initial sort, take the trash away, and move the donate / sell boxes to another place (preferably out of your house). Now we get down to the nitty gritty of learning how to organize - in the next step we will start building our border so that we are able to put things back in an organized way. Keep a box or two around so that any items you decide you no longer need can be placed in the box. If you have a lot of items you no longer need, consider selling them at a local convention or online homeschool books site.

If you are limited on space in your school area, take a look around your home to see if you have storage spaces anywhere. To keep the number of school items to a minimum you can choose to keep out only what you will be using immediately (within the week, month, semester or year). For the items you are storing organize them on a shelf (if possible) or in labeled boxes. Label your boxes with the contents so when you need to retrieve items they will be easier to find. An idea for how to organize the storage boxes are to label them with the approximate year (i.e. first grade, middle school, etc), the subject (math, science) and the date of when you put the box into storage. If you find that you have one or more boxes that you do not use for a while, consider if you need to keep the items in the box, or if you can sell or donate the items.

Step 2: Building a Border

Since I have yet to see two homeschool rooms that look alike I am going to go over some of the basics of how to organize your homeschool items, from there, you should have a pretty good handle on things and can continue on. If not, send me an email through our contact us page and let me know your question on how to organize your homeschool (or any other area) and I will try to be of some assistance.

Books:

Living books, textbooks, workbooks, lab books, notebooks, chapter books, first reader books, picture books, puzzle books, teacher books, student books, books about homeschooling, books, books, books - if you homeschool, you have books. The question is how to organize all of those books?

One option, depending on space, is a bookshelf. We have used kit built shelves as well as have custom bookshelves built into a closet by using shelf brackets and wood from our local hardware store. Homemade shelves are fairly simple to make and if you don't have the equipment to cut the wood at home, most hardware stores will cut pieces for you (for a small fee), just make sure you measure before you go. (Measure twice, cut once - otherwise it is measure once, cut once, buy some more...)

If you want other shelf organizer options, you can look at the cubbyhole shelf options, or a wall mounted book shelf. There are a number of options available so take your time and look around to determine the best idea on how to organize your books. (after all, you have to live with it, I don't)

Supplies:

Supplies tend to multiply, you start with a few pens, then they somehow grow into dozens of pens. Deciding how to organize these supplies will vary from homeschool to homeschool. Below you will find a variety of drawer suggestions and other ways to organize various supplies. Use these items as a spring board to style your own border. Be sure to read through step 3 for information on using a label maker to help you learn how to organize your bins, boxes, and drawers in an easy to use way.

Wide drawers will organize paper, pens, even workbooks. I discovered these drawers when I was trying to decide how to organize lab supplies. One of my drawers is for live experiments, this doesn't mean that I keep frogs or bugs in there, instead I use it for organizing food for fish and frogs, seeds for plants and other supplies. Another drawer is our Explorer Gear drawer, that one contains binoculars, small nets, a small bug habitat as well as other supplies. Wide drawers are can be found in the plastic storage section or the craft section. These are generally 12 x 12 so they are great for books and papers.

Mini drawers are great for organizing pens, pencils, paper clips, rubber bands and all of those little office supplies. When looking at drawers be sure to check the information on the drawer sizes before buying online. For example, on some websites the mini drawers look larger than the wide drawers, this is however, not the case in real life. Check your space allotment by measuring, then find drawers that will fit. (Great homeschool project - make the kids measure then figure out the area of the space and which drawers will fit best)

Shoe boxes may not seem to have a space in your homeschool space, but they are wonderful for organizing. When you want to discover how to organize math manipulatives, various games and science equipment think shoe boxes. Items can be easily organized and as the boxes have lids they can also be stacked. When looking for storage boxes, be sure to look for clear boxes for ease of identification of the items within, if you constantly have to take the tops off of boxes to find out what is in the box you will soon give up on your organizational system. You also want boxes that have lids. While having baskets may look prettier, they do not stack and if something is taken off of the shelf incorrectly it make a big mess. Another reason to have boxes with lids is that you are learning how to organize, and it is very easy in the beginning of the learn how to organize process to fall back into old habits. A box without a lid becomes a dumping ground for little things.

A decorative way to organize includes the use of baskets (I know I just said don't use baskets, but after you have learned how to organize, you can begin to look at other options, like baskets. Just be sure they are used for very specific things. We have three baskets under a long table by the front door, these are our library baskets. Only library books and the check out slips are placed in the baskets. You can also utilize door space, by using something like a 15-Pocket Over Door Organizer or a file folder holder. We have also used the Kids' Toy Organizer and Storage Bin, but not in the schoolroom. It started in the schoolroom, but then I have found this doesn't work as well since there are no lids. In the kids rooms, toy organizers work fairly well to keep toys organized, but it all depends on the ages of your kids and the variety of your supplies. Teaching your kids how to organize their own things now will save you time later.

Step 3: Filling in the Pieces

Now is when you start putting things back. An item that I have found to be a great organizing tool is a label maker. Some examples of label makers are the DYMO Personal Label Maker or the Brother P-touch Electronic Labeling System. You can even use printable Avery Mailing Labels. The whole point is you need a way to label. What are you going to label? The short answer is: everything. All of the boxes, drawers, and pockets should get a label. This way if you find an empty box, you know what was supposed to be in it. Also, when you look into your storage area you can see at a glance what you have. Where else can you use these labels? 3 Ring Binders! If you want to know how to organize multiple binders in the same space (I usually buy them as a multi-pack so they all look alike) without getting having to open each binder to determine its content, put a label on the spine and eliminate this issue.

Step 4: The Final Step - How to Organize to that You Can Stay Organized

Once you have learned how to organize you need to learn how to keep it organized. A simple organizational system will make it easier for you to keep organized. One of the ways I do this is by labeling my boxes on both ends, that way when the kids put them back onto the shelf (see - teaching kids how to organize) backwards it doesn't matter, because the boxes are labeled on both ends. Another way I keep organized is by having a Mommy section and a kids section. In the kids section there are the items that the kids can use and learn with on their own, in the mommy section are the things that I think they need help with. This will vary based on the age of your kids. Remember unless you live alone (and if you homeschool then you don't live alone) you are not the only one who needs to know how to organize. If everyone knows how to organize then your life will be a lot easier.

The bottom line - have fun turning your school area into an organized place to be, that way you will all enjoy spending time there. Organizing doesn't have to be hard - take time to look through your things. Keep what you want, get rid of what you don't and organize what is left so that you can find everything when you need to.

Must-Have Auto Accessories For Family Travel

When traveling with the family, there are a few things you should never leave behind. Your car, van or SUV can get messy in a hurry if you don't plan ahead and organize, at least mentally, before you leave your home. Whether car trash or the kids' small toys, items can build up in your vehicle within just an hour or two. Luckily, there is an auto accessory to help combat almost every problem that can occur when you travel with kids.

Toy Storage Organizer

Avoid Car Litter

Toy Storage Organizer

Car litter can build up with just one stop at a convenient store or restaurant. Imagine a family of four, each with a drink and snack in hand every time you exit a store or restaurant! This equals at the very least six to eight pieces of car trash just for one stop. If you're taking a long 10-hour trip, that could equal about four or five stops and about 30 pieces of car litter! To help combat car litter, take along a car accessory made specifically for storing auto trash. This could be a small auto trash bin or two (for vans) to hold trash until you can get to the next store or restaurant. When you arrive at your next rest stop, you can empty the auto trash bin to prevent spills, leaks, and bad smells. A good car accessory for car litter might be a litterbag, plastic auto bin, or cloth litter bag. Plastic car litter bins often work best because they will not retain smells and are easy to wipe clean along the way.

Prepare for the Traveling Munchies

It seems kids are hungry and thirsty every hour on the hour when traveling. You can prepare for these traveling "munchies" and save lots of money by taking along some auto accessories for snacks and drinks. Take an ice cooler along and pack it full of can drinks or bottle drinks, juice bottles, or even milk. Have it readily available when the kids cry, "I'm thirsty!" When you compare the prices of buying packs of drinks at a local grocery to buying individual drinks at a convenient store, you'll see a tremendous savings. Also, organize snacks in advance. Take along snacks that are easy to eat and will not melt or leave excessive crumbs. Pack the snacks in individual baggies or small lunch pouches for each kid before leaving the home. Keep the snacks handy so you can hand them out as needed.

Prevent Messes and Spills

Another must-have auto accessory is a sturdy car console. Car consoles enable the driver and front passenger to store their drinks and snacks without the threat of spills and splashes. A car console can hold regular-sized soft drinks, cups, coffee mugs, and even sometimes auto cassettes or CDs and other small items.

Travel Toys and Games

When you travel with kids, you're likely to have toys and games to keep them occupied. Give each child a bag or plastic storage container to keep his or her games and toys organized. Let him or her know that every toy or game must be put in its container after use. An auto accessory that works great for storing small toys is a plastic auto bin. These can be used for car trash or toy storage. Other auto accessories that can make travel with kids more pleasant, safe, and fun include an auto emergency first aid kit, portable DVD players with headphones, car seat storage bags, lap trays for coloring and drawing, seatsaver mats, baby mirrors (attachable to seats), sun-block window shades, car seat covers for sun/heat protection, travel pillows and blankets, and compact auto organizers. With the right auto accessories, your family trip can be enjoyable, clean, and safe!

Installing Baseboard Trim Tips and Techniques

Installing baseboard is one of the easier facets of finish carpentry. By learning just this part of finish carpentry you will be surprised at how easy and fast you pick up the other aspects regarding trimming. For instance, taking the basics of installing baseboard and applying them to installing shoe or quarter round or even chair rail and crown molding really works. In a sense it is the plat form or starting point to learning this trade. Of course installing doors and casing doors and trimming windows is a little more complicated but is not really that tough with a little research or guidance. This information for research is all over the web and is free, abundant and invaluable for learning. Here are some quick tips for installing baseboard.

Toy Storage Organizer

When installing baseboard where future carpeting will be installed you want to keep the baseboard up off the floor so the carpeting can be tucked in under the baseboard. The way to handle this is to cut a few short pieces of baseboard about 3 inches long or so and lay them down next to the wall so the piece of baseboard that will be installed and nailed in place rests on these short pieces. This will create a space about 3/8 of an inch under the baseboard after it is installed.

Toy Storage Organizer

When you come up to a 90 degree outside corner always trial fit the baseboard in place and let the baseboard run past the corner. Then take your pencil and trace the corner up the back of the baseboard. This will give you the exact measurement of where to cut. When you cut this piece always try to split your pencil line with the blade and for a 90 degree corner cut this piece at exactly 46 degrees. Sheet rock corners are never perfect and your line most likely won't be perfectly vertical on the back of the baseboard so split the line at the most outer point or at the longest point.

When you come to an inside corner there are a couple ways to handle these. One way is to miter the joint. The other way and most preferred is coping the joint. Coping is cleaner and neater looking and just plain easier. To start from the beginning for doing a cope read careful, you only cope one piece and that is the second piece that leads out of the corner.

The first piece of baseboard goes squarely and tightly against and into the corner. Then the actual cope goes onto the second piece of baseboard that meets the first piece that was previously installed. Take this second piece of baseboard and make a 45 degree back cut on the end that goes into the corner. On this piece there will be a natural cut line or profile line. Simply use a coping saw and cut off the material by following this natural profile line.
This will create the exact profile of the baseboard and this piece will fit exactly into the first piece like a glove. When you are cutting with the coping saw be sure to be creating a bevel so the back of the baseboard is slightly shorter then the face or front.

For quick nailing or attaching baseboard to a wall a stud finder works well. You really need to be hitting studs every time so the baseboard is secure and stays securely fastened. However if you do not have a stud finder another quick method is by simply using your tape measure.
Find one stud in the wall towards the center of the wall, then on your tape measure the 16 inch increments are well marked, just lay your tape down the length of the wall and put one of the 16 inch increments at this one stud. Then at each 16 inch increment shoot a nail through the base and into the wall. You should hit a stud every time provided the wall studs are framed at 16 inches on center. Some times walls are framed at 2 feet on center and some times the framing may be off slightly so check the baseboard after each time you nail to be sure it is secure.

There are other tips and tricks to installing baseboard but by just doing it and getting more practice these little tricks can and will be picked up naturally and automatically. Almost everyone develops their own little unique techniques when learning and doing finish carpentry.

3 Essential Steps to Clutter Control

Ever wonder why you have so much trouble with clutter taking over your home? If so, there are 3 essential steps you can do to keep clutter under control.

Toy Storage Organizer

Step 1: Decide whether you are living in what-is land or what-if land.

Toy Storage Organizer

The first thing you can do is decide if you are holding onto a lot of things as a result of "just-in-case" scenarios.

You may be indirectly inviting clutter in your home if you are keeping things in order to prepare for situations that rarely occur.

Preparation is fine but only up to a certain point. It's one thing to keep some things you think you might need. But there comes a time in which you must draw the line and learn to live with the circumstances of "right now."

Truthfully, you may not enjoy hoarding. You probably just want to be cautious, but haven't found a logical system on how to separate items which may be essentially important to you from items that are no longer substantially important to you.

As a result it becomes difficult to figure out what items belong on the "must keep" and "must go" list.

So, it all really boils down to strategy.

And once you find the right strategy, you'll find that letting go of things is a heck of a lot easier.

And that's what we're going to talk about now.

Step 2: Set guidelines for quantity-in/quantity-out flow.

The second thing you'll want to do to control clutter is to set guidelines for yourself.

Setting guidelines is what I consider to be the short-term clutter clearing process.

It is done routinely. It's handled on a daily and weekly basis, and it's what keeps clutter down to a minimum so that when you finally get around to doing the big clean-up it's a lot easier to handle things.

As obvious as it might seem, the majority of us do not have a set of guidelines for quantity-in and quantity-out.

We allow plenty of things to come into our homes without giving much thought to keeping things balanced. Spring cleaning once a year just can't compete with the consistency of buying things every couple of weeks.

And as a result we end up having more things than we know what to do with.

To get things back on track your quantity-out flow should be on par with your quantity-in flow.

That means when you're buying certain items for your home, it's a good idea to consider getting rid of equal amount of items at that point in time.

Let's use DVD buying as an example.

Just about all of us love movies. I'm a movie fan just like anyone else, and although I like to watch movies I'm very specific about allowing too many movies into my home.

I am particular about it for several reasons. The most obvious reason is clutter. Another reason is that I don't want to spend too much of my quality time watching movies. If I am a fanatic about DVD collecting, chances are other things in my life are getting neglected.

So in order to keep the balance I only allow a certain amount of DVDs in my home at one time.

Generally this number ranges around 5-7 DVDs. Maximum allotment is no more than about 10 DVDs. Once I reach my range of 5-7 DVDs and I've grown bored with them, I sell one or all of them and replace them with new movies of interest.

In the midst of all of this I rent or check movies out at the library so that I still have the chance to see new movies, but I never own more than my quantity allotment at one time.

And as I said above, this helps me keep clutter down to a minimum. And it also keeps me attentive to how I spend my quality time.

It keeps the quantity-in and quantity-out flow in harmony and I don't have to seek extra storage for a habit (of movie collecting) that's grown out of hand.

This is how I handle many things in my home, from dishware to books. I create a simple (mental) quality-in and quality-out allotment and I'm careful not to step over the boundaries.

I frequently ask myself...

1. What will I allow in my home?

2. What is the designated allotment of a specific type of item that is allowed in my home (quantity-in) before it's time to replace that allotment (quantity-out)?

...so that I can control my items rather than having my items control me.

The end result is a simple organized system that puts money I've spent back into my pocket many times over while reducing clutter.

Step 3: Take inventory every 3 months and do a major clean-up.

The third thing you can do for yourself is take inventory and do a major clean-up every 3 or so months.

This is what I like to consider the long-term clutter clearing process. It's handled on a monthly basis or every several months and it helps you tidy up what cannot be achieved daily or weekly basis.

Generally, getting rid of things is often a black and white process for many people, but in my opinion there's actually a gray area in between that's often ignored or overlooked during a major clean-up.

This is the area that I believe helps a lot of us transition from being hoarders to getting rid of things appropriately.

As well, I think it also helps most of us hold on to things we may need in the future rather than dumping them prematurely.

It is the safety-net phase. The phase that makes all of the difference.

What you would consider as a grace period.

During a major clean-up there will be times in which you run across items you aren't quite sure you should get rid of. An item in which you might want to keep "just in case."

To make certain that you're not keeping items that should be gotten rid of, you should ask yourself this...

"How will I manage if it turns out I need this item and I don't have it?"

If it's going to be some major trouble to get it and it's gone, then you've got your answer. Chances are good you should keep it.

But if it's easy to replace with a few bucks and a few minutes of your time if you should ever need it again, then chances are good you can get rid of it (donate it or sell it) without any trouble.

But what happens if you're really not sure and it would be a big mistake to get rid of it?

Well, this is where the grace period comes in.

Rather than decide for certain what to do with that item, you can place it on your mental inventory list and give it a 3 month grace period.

That is, simply leave it where it is. Don't get rid of it. Let it be.

Allow yourself 3 more months before you return to it (during your next major clean-up). And once you return to it again you can then ask yourself whether you still need it.

If you're not sure, you're welcome to give it another grace period but generally once you've reached your 6 month grace period and you haven't used it it's usually safe to get rid of it.

Use your common sense and gut instinct. There will always be certain situations in which these rules don't apply and you will have to go on your own intuition.

However, the basic set of guidelines will help you remove doubt with most items. This will in turn help you reduce clutter and gain control over your possessions.

And isn't that the point...

Gaining control of your possessions so that they no longer continue to control you.

Mudroom Madness

Is your mudroom, hallway, foyer or entry way making you mad?

Toy Storage Organizer

Do you constantly trip over everything on the floor?

Toy Storage Organizer

Is there no space to put anything?

Or has your clutter been like this so long that you just pass by and not really see what your guests see?

You may just spend minutes coming or going but this brief time can definitely set the tone for the start or end of your working day.

Nothing says welcome like entering into a space where you feel comfortable and can easily store your coat, shoes and outerwear items. Think about your home's entry and incorporate these ideas to help keep it in top shape and keep you sane:

1. Give each family member a space: limit the amount each person can keep there (number of shoes, bags, etc.). Locker-like cubbies, milk crates or laundry baskets are great and can work well depending on the space. Allow only items that are used frequently and for that season in this area. Have adjustable shelves and hooks to grow with your child. Think about what is reachable for your child when deciding where to hang hooks and put baskets. Square cubbies are great for kids' extra-curricular supplies and equipment; even shallow cubbies are helpful for stashing things away.

2. Have a place to sit to put on shoes. A bench with storage under the seat is a great multi-purpose item. A chest or toy box can make a great bench/storage option, too. Or tuck bins under a bench or chairs. This is a great place to keep sports equipment. Be diligent about keeping this seat clutter-free so you will always have a spot to quickly sit to lace up your shoes.

3.Provide enough hooks. Make sure that there is at least one hook per family member (an easy alternative to nagging kids to hang up coats). Strong hooks are also great to get book bags off the floor. Use big hooks for heavy coats and small ones for umbrellas and hats. Don't forget the family dog! Have a hook for his leash. Hooks can also be placed on the back of doors. Hooks are a great way to tap into unused storage space- the walls and doors. Make sure the kids' hooks are at their level and the adults can use the upper space.

4. Create a specific area for your pets. In one spot store leashes, waste bags, outside toys, treats, a cloth to wipe paws and winter paw protector or booties. Think about opting for bag holders that attach to the leash, collapsible water bowls and treat or ball bags that clip on your belt to save your pockets from an overflow of plastic bags and 'cookie' crumbs. Have reflective bands for you and your dog for nighttime outings-especially important in fall and winter as the days become shorter. You may also wish to consider a place to stash indoor toys on your way out.

5.Think up, way up. Build a custom cabinet up to the ceiling to maximize storage of out of season items higher up. If you are working with the closet you have, use labeled bins and boxes for seldom used or out of season items and store higher up. Consider adding an extra shelf above the existing ones. Could you double rod the closet - adults coats on the top - children's below. If you do not have a front closet, you must be particularly selective about what you keep in your entrance. Think seasonal - what do I really need right now? Keep things for this time of year and store the rest elsewhere in your house.

6. Watch out for wet items. Allow each family member to have only one pair of shoes out at a time on a boot rack. Once a pair is dry it should be put away. Wet mittens and hats can be hung by clothes pins on a line that runs vertically or horizontally--thread line through pins' spring, spacing them along the line, or use a pretty piece of 1 inch ribbon that they will easily clip to. Hang this mini clothesline close to a heat vent or heater. Again, once dry, these items should be stashed away.

7. Make a message centre. A bulletin board nearby, will help keep your family on schedule. Pin forms, invitations, practice schedules, and a calendar. This will help you remember to grab these items on the way out.

8. Check yourself out - add a mirror. Not only does it help make the space appear larger, it is convenient for you to give yourself a once-over before rushing out the door. It will help you catch turned up collars, food in teeth and hat-head. Get a mirror that has a small ledge for lipstick and a comb.

9. Give some careful thought to every item in the mudroom. Use waterproof paint and tile floors to deal with the moisture that will be coming in. Allow lots of natural light in and install ceiling light for nighttime entrances. If there is something there that doesn't serve a purpose, remove it. Space is at a premium in the mudroom, so make sure you have a rationale for all your choices.

It may be a little space, but a little time and thought can rid you of the aggravation and madness of your mudroom.
